Being Human Being – Erik Truffaz/Murcof/Enki Bilal

Illustrated concert with:

Being Human Being – a non-identifiable audible object – was born of the alliance of Erik Truffaz, a jazzman with a flair for musical experimentation and melding genres, and Murcof, visually augmented by comic book master Enki Bilal and accompanied by Philippe Garica on drums. The philosophical title hides an uncommonly intense visual concert that takes the audience by the ears, and the eyes, on a truly interstellar voyage.

Art is the fruit of a singular vision, but with a plurality of artists, the singular can be even more radical. French-Swiss trumpeter Erik Truffaz has been working with the Mexican artist Murcof (initially Fernando Corona) since 2006. This prolific duo, which ties together modern jazz and spectral electro, was abruptly extended and rejuvenated in 2012, when Erik Truffaz met Enki Bilal, a charismatic painter and illustrator capable of creating a universe in a few brush strokes, and able to evoke a narrative by capturing simple facial expressions or physical movements. It was inevitable that their coming together would lead to something extraordinary. The multifaceted piece that emerged, Being Human Being, is an audacious one that abolishes any notion of artistic boundaries. Its object is obvious from its title: although homo sapiens may be but a singularity in the evolution of the planet, humans are most qualified to scan the horizon of this strange world – our collective future.

The breath of jazz and a futuristic profusion of electronic music come together with Enki Bilal’s illustrations for an audio-visual show on the beauty and the brutality of the human race.
